While the Hollow Nook by Community Playthings' primary function is to provide a quiet sanctuary, it can also facilitate children's learning through play. The Hollow Nook is beautifully made, blends into the space without overwhelming it, and stands up brilliantly to everyday use, but don't just take our word for it!

Did the children enjoy using the product?

The children were SO excited when they saw The Nook. They were instantly drawn to the new space, and it's been wonderful watching them explore and interact. The Nook has provided a much-needed 'calm' space for the children in my class. The Nook has been used every day since we had it, and each time I observe, the children use it in different ways. They particularly enjoy the curtains and the peepholes. It is safe to say it's one of their favourite places to go individually or sit with friends.

How did the children use the product?

They have used The Nook in different ways. Some children like to go there for some quiet time with their books or a sensory/calm resource we have available. Other children like to use the space with friends. For example, I observed one child inside The Nook while another child read to them. They used the peepholes to 'post' some of our emotion beanbags through, and the child inside had to guess the emotion. In general, they have used the Nook, as I predicted, but it's lovely to see each child/group interact in different ways. Seeing them so happy and excited to go to this space has been brilliant.

Does the product offer good value for money?

The product is brilliant value for money. It is beautifully made and such an inviting and unique piece of furniture. I love the neutral tones and carpeted top and interior. It is a cosy and comfortable space. It is extremely durable and well-made. The Nook feels very 'special', and I don't think I have ever had such a beautiful piece of furniture in my room!

Would you recommend the product to other nurseries?

I would 100% recommend The Nook! It is not only fantastic to create a 'calm' space but also supports learners with SEND who find busy environments overwhelming. It is a brilliant alternative to a 'Dark Den' and beautifully fits with calm, natural learning environments. The way the product is designed makes it unique and inviting, and the hollow tree design brings some of the outside in. It is a wonderful feature and a cosy space for little ones to retreat in the hustle and bustle of a busy classroom/setting. The Nook supports Personal, Social and Emotional development and Communication and Language.

What would you mark the product out of 10?

No doubt in my mind it deserves a 10!

The Hollow Nook for SEN and SEND

These activities not only stimulate critical thinking but also enhance problem-solving capacities in children, making learning a more engaging and enjoyable experience. Surrounding children with thoughtfully chosen educational materials within the Hollow Nook can lead to improved attention spans and deeper concentration

Social, Emotional and mental health

One of the Hollow Nook's most valuable aspects is its role in emotional regulation. The quiet acoustic shelter offers a calming space for self-regulation, helping children manage emotions and reduce anxiety which can be challenging in more stimulating settings. It can serve as a retreat for children needing a sensory overload break, promoting emotional well-being and an essential space for emotional decompression providing children the opportunity to decompress and process their environment at their own pace.

Sensory and/or physical needs

The Hollow Nook is designed to accommodate children with sensory and physical needs, creating a uniquely supportive space. The carpeted top with textured trim provides tactile stimulation, while the mesh curtain filters light and visual stimuli, creating a soothing environment. The solid beech construction ensures stability, allowing children to brace against the sides for physical support. To enhance its sensory offerings, practitioners can add weighted cushions or gentle lighting to customize the space based on individual needs. The elevated floor and structured environment help children develop spatial awareness and cognitive skills.
