How colour influences productivity in a classroom

In order to ensure a smooth transition, classroom logistics must be evaluated to provide children with the best possible environment to learn. Although not immediately obvious, colour choice in classrooms has a large effect on pupils’ productivity, and below are some recommendations on which colours to use and where:

Brighter colours for increased stimulation

Brighter hues such as reds and yellows are most effective at drawing attention and conveying urgency when needed, such as on hazard and warning signage. Although red in classrooms promotes high alertness and increases brain activity, excessive use can be an over-stimulant leading to increased anxiety and potential distraction. Balance may be achieved here by implementing red furniture around the classroom, such as storage furniture, chairs or desks. Listed as the Pantone colour of the year 2021, yellows follow a similar path, used in moderation on classroom furniture to promote creativity and maintain attention, however in excess it can promote anxiety and agitation.

Brighter colours are best used in primary education.

Where to implement: Reds and oranges are best used sparingly in the classroom in the form of furniture or wall hangings. Yellows are highly effective in creative areas such as workshops or studios.

Cooler colours for increased concentration

Cooler colours such as blues and greens are ideal in classrooms for restoring some much-needed calmness and tranquillity. Blue tones are recognised for promoting higher levels of thought, communication and productivity. Greens reflecting that of nature have a similar effect, igniting feelings of concentration and restfulness. Purples also fall under this category, and with associated connotations of luxury and sophistication, feelings are fostered of inventiveness and imagination.

Cooler tones are best used in secondary education.

Where to implement: Blues and greens are best used for quieter areas such as libraries or secluded study zones. Purples work best in breakout zones where autonomy is encouraged.
