Why Mini Beasts Matter in Early Years Education

From ladybirds hiding under logs to butterflies fluttering through storytime, mini beasts have a magical way of capturing children’s attention. They spark questions, inspire creativity, and encourage children to slow down and really observe the world around them.

At YPO, we love learning that starts with wonder. And this month, we’re celebrating all things mini beasts! From hands-on exploration to a simple but brilliant craft activity we shared on our socials, designed to turn everyday materials into buzzing, colourful learning moments.

Whether you have a wild garden, a small outdoor area, or even a tuff tray, mini beast learning can happen anywhere. Here’s how to bring it to life in your early years setting.

Mini Beasts in Early Years and Why They Matter

Mini beasts are a staple topic in early years environments for good reason. They’re endlessly fascinating. Teaching children about insects, bugs, and small creatures helps support multiple areas of development all at once!

Mini beast learning supports:

Understanding the World: Habitats, life cycles, and care for living things.

Communication & Language: New vocabulary such as antennae, wings and spots.

Personal, Social & Emotional Development: Respecting living creatures and learning empathy.

Physical Development: Fine motor skills through crafts and mark making.

Expressive Arts & Design: Creating, storytelling and imaginative play.

Mini beasts also naturally lend themselves to outdoor learning, and child‑led exploration - both key pillars of early years provision.

Craft Meets Curiosity: Wooden Spoon Mini Beasts

One of our favourite mini beast activities, and a huge hit with educators on our socials is a simple wooden spoon craft that transforms everyday materials into butterflies, bees, and ladybirds.

This activity is a perfect example of how creative play and learning go hand in hand. It’s low cost, highly adaptable, and full of opportunities for discussion and problem solving.

What We Used:

Wooden spoons (235135)

Each child can designee their own mini beast by decorating the spoon by adding eyes and details, twisting pipe cleaners into antennae, and attaching wings to bring their creature to life.

Learning Through Craft: More Than Just Making

While the finished mini beasts look fantastic, real learning happens during the process.

As children create their butterflies, bees, and ladybirds, they’re also:

Strengthening fine motor skills through colouring, sticking, and twisting

Making choices about colours, shapes, and designs

Building confidence by creating something independently

Developing focus skills by completing a multi-step activity

Educator Tip: Encourage children to talk about their mini beast as they make it. Ask questions like:

“Where does your mini beast live?”

“What does it like to eat?”

“Does it fly or crawl?”

These prompts naturally support storytelling, vocabulary development, and early understanding of habitats.

From Craft Table to Continuous Provision
