In today’s education landscape, safeguarding is more than a statutory duty - it’s a shared commitment to wellbeing, creating a culture of vigilance, improving staff confidence and organisational resilience when responding to risks. The principle of safeguarding helps to create nurturing, safe and inclusive environments where everyone feels valued and can thrive. It encompasses everything from physical safety and emotional wellbeing to digital resilience and protection. 

YPO’s Level 3 Safeguarding Support Officer apprenticeship programme is a practical, impactful route for education staff to deepen their safeguarding expertise while gaining a nationally recognised qualification. It’s designed to elevate safeguarding practice across all types of settings - early years, schools, and local authorities - by embedding confident, capable professionals at the heart of learner support. 

Apprenticeships offer a valuable opportunity for adults and existing staff to upskill, gain nationally recognised qualifications, and advance in their careers - whilst continuing in their current roles. This type of tailored programme supports career progression and improves overall performance in the workplace. The role of the Safeguarding Officer

Safeguarding officers play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between policy and practice. Beyond compliance, they serve as advocates, listeners, and protectors. Their key responsibilities include:

• Ensuring everyone understands their rights and know how to raise concerns
• Supporting employers to recognise and respond to safeguarding issues
• Promoting safe working environments and inclusive learning cultures
• Coordinating with external agencies when additional support is needed
• Embedding consistent standards and shared values, ensuring no one falls through the cracks

These professionals are often the first point of contact for people in need, and their presence can change how safeguarding is perceived and implemented across an organisation. 

How apprentices are supported

Apprentices who undertake the Safeguarding Support Officer programme benefit from a robust support structure that blends academic learning with real-world application. Key elements include: 

•  Dedicated tutor support: Apprentices are guided by experienced safeguarding tutors who provide personalised feedback, coaching, and sector-specific insights throughout the apprenticeship programme.
