Joseph's apprenticeship journey

How did you decide YPO was for you and why did you chose the apprenticeship route?

After sixth form, I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to go to university or if I should start looking for a job. I had heard about YPO from my cousin who started off as an apprentice here and she told me that it would be good for me to try get an apprenticeship there. It would not only give me valuable experience working in an office environment, but it is also an opportunity to learn new skills in a job that is different every day, whilst also gaining a qualification.

How has it been starting an apprenticeship in lockdown with restricted rules? What support have you been given?

Starting my apprenticeship in lockdown with restricted rules has meant that throughout my apprenticeship so far, it has been more challenging than normal. Working from home has been one of these challenges, as it stops me engaging and interacting with people in the office where I could be learning a lot more and building up the experience in an office environment. However, with such a supportive team that are always willing to help, it is still easy to learn and ask for guidance if needed. YPO also supplied me with all the equipment that I needed to work from home to help support me, so that it wasn’t as difficult as it could have been.

What do you enjoy most about your role as an apprentice?

Being an apprentice means that each day is different which gives me an opportunity to learn something new every day. You also get to work with everyone in your team which means that there is always a job that you can be helping with, so you are always being productive. Working with everyone in the team also means that you start to pick up and understand more about their jobs as well as your own, so you have a wider understanding of what goes on, on a day-to-day basis in the team you are working in.

What’s next?

I have always been unsure about what I have wanted to do and pursue in the future, however, after working at YPO for around 5 months as one of the business administrator apprentices, I think that working in procurement is a possibility for my future. There is always something to learn, it can be challenging at times and because every day is different, I think it is something I would want to carry on doing. Hopefully, in the future once I have gained more experience and knowledge, I will be able to try and put myself forward and apply for a fulltime job at YPO.
