How to create a calm and inclusive Bonfire Night

As Bonfire Night approaches, people are beginning to plan their vibrant celebrations and fun activities. Whilst this is a joyous and exciting experience for most of us, it can often be a case of discomfort and sensory overload for children with SEND. The loud noises and display of fireworks can be overwhelming for children who have sensory issues. It is important to try and create a more calm and inclusive Bonfire Night so that all children are able to witness and enjoy the dazzling views. Below are a few of the ways in which we can create this safe environment.

Incorporate noise reduction strategies

As Bonfire Night entails a loud celebration, some children with SEND may experience sensory overload when hearing the fireworks. It is vital that children’s hearing is protected from noisy environments and disturbances. The Children's Ear Defenders are an excellent way to do this as they can easily help children from being disturbed by noise. Alternatively, you can use noise cancelling headphones that are designed to block outside noise. These products are perfect for children who want to enjoy the beautiful firework displays.

Watch the skies from a distance

Some children may find that looking at the fireworks closely can hinder their sight due to the bright and flamboyant nature. In order to create a safer environment, you can allow your child to watch the skies from an indoor, safer distance.
