Mock exams and GCSE preparation can feel overwhelming for students, teachers and parents alike. Knowing when to start revising, how to stay organised, and which revision techniques can make a difference to confidence and results.

We asked Ibby (@ibbyxoxox on Instagram), a Year 11 teacher and history lead, to share practical advice on preparing for mocks, supporting students through exam revision season, and the simple resources that help learners stay focused and exam ready.

Q&A with Ibby

When should GCSE revision begin?

Many students think revision starts in Year 11, but in reality preparation begins much earlier.

Ibby: “We start preparing pupils for assessments and mocks from the start of Year 10 by gradually increasing the level of practice questions and the amount of content we cover. We also try to get them used to how to revise for assessments so it doesn’t feel new when they reach Year 11.”

Building revision habits early helps students feel more confident when mock exams begin and reduces the pressure closer to GCSEs.

What are the common revision challenges for Year 11 students?

One of the most common difficulties is not knowing what to revise or when to revise it.

“Students often struggle with organising their revision. They don’t always know what topics to focus on first or how to plan their time.”, says Ibby.

Teachers can help by providing structure and clear guidance, such as:

• Revision schedules
• Knowledge organisers
• Flashcards and booklets
• Practice questions
• Subject revision resources

Having the right materials available makes revision feel more manageable and helps students stay on track.

How can students stay focused and motivated during revision?

Long revision sessions are not always the most effective. Short, structured bursts of learning often work better.

Ibby: “I recommend the Pomodoro technique. This is where students revise in short bursts and take regular breaks. For example, 20 minutes of revision followed by a five minute break, repeated three times, then taking a longer break.”

Breaks are important for concentration and wellbeing. Activities such as exercise, reading, watching TV or having a snack can help students reset before the next revision session.

What is the Pomodoro technique for revision?

Definition, you can find the full Tes article here:

'The Pomodoro technique is a time management method designed to help students stay focused while avoiding burnout. It involves working in short, timed bursts followed by regular breaks to keep the brain alert and productive. Typically, a student revises for around 20 to 25 minutes, then takes a short five minute break, repeating this cycle several times before taking a longer break of around 15 to 30 minutes. The idea is that shorter periods of concentrated effort are easier to maintain than long revision sessions, helping students improve focus, retain information more effectively, and reduce feelings of overwhelm during exam preparation.'

What revision techniques work best in the classroom?

Not all revision methods are equally effective. Active learning tends to be more useful than simply reading notes.

“Having pre-prepared resources and practice questions is really effective. Making flashcards and creating timelines is also very useful, especially in subjects like history. Simply giving students a revision guide and asking them to make mind maps isn’t always the best use of time.”

Techniques that often work well include:

• Practice exam questions
• Flashcards for key terms and dates
• Timelines and visual organisers
• Knowledge organisers
• Teacher guided revision sessions

These approaches encourage students to recall information rather than just re-read it.

What does a good revision routine look like at home?

Consistency is more important than cramming.

“Little and often works best. Starting in Year 10 and not leaving revision until March of Year 11 makes a big difference.”, says Ibby.

Research shows that mixing topics during revision can improve memory.

Ibby: “Revising different subjects in one session can help build stronger pathways in the brain. For example, making flashcards for maths, English, history and geography, then mixing them up so you don’t know which topic will come next.”

This type of revision helps students retain information for longer.

How should students use mock exams to prepare for GCSEs?

Mocks are not just tests. They are a chance to learn what needs more work.

Ibby: “Students should review their answers carefully and look at the mark schemes to understand where they lost marks. They should also ask teachers for help in areas they struggle with, rather than only revising topics they already feel confident in.”

Useful steps after mocks include:

• Checking mark schemes
• Identifying weaker topics
• Practising similar questions
• Asking teachers for feedback
• Updating revision plans

Using mock results properly can make a big difference before final GCSE exams.

What should students do if they feel overwhelmed during revision?

Revision season can feel stressful, especially when students don’t know where to begin.

Ibby: “It’s always better to do a little bit of revision and take a break than to cram at the last minute. Working with friends can help, and students should speak to a trusted adult if they feel worried. A problem shared is a problem halved.”

Encouraging small steps, regular breaks and open conversations can help reduce anxiety.

What revision resources are available to help students stay organised during exam season?

Providing students with simple, practical tools can help them stay organised and independent.

“In revision packs we often include flashcards, revision guides, highlighters, sticky notes and notepads.”

Check out Ibby's TikTok video here, where she showcases YPO's wide range of revision resources.

These resources help students:
• Learn key terms and dates
• Catch up on missed content
• Highlight important information
• Create timelines
• Keep notes organised

Having everything in one place makes revision easier to manage.

Here is your revision shopping list:
1. Revision Books
2. Highlighters
3. Flashcards
4. Sticky Notes
5. Pens
6. Notepad
7. Index Tabs
8. Plastic Wallets

How can students stay organised during GCSE revision?

Organisation is one of the biggest factors in successful revision.

Ibby: “It helps to make a list of all the topics that need revising and split them into smaller sections. Students can rate how confident they feel with each one and start with the topics they find hardest.”

A simple method is to colour code topics:

• Red – not confident
• Amber – partly confident
• Green – confident

Starting with the most difficult areas ensures revision time is used effectively.

What is the best advice for Year 11 students and parents?

Starting early and staying consistent can reduce stress later.

“Start revising as soon as possible, even if it’s only ten minutes a day. It helps your brain get used to retaining information and makes the lead-up to exams less stressful. Take regular breaks and don’t be afraid to ask for support.”

For parents, encouragement and routine can make a big difference. Helping students create a calm space to revise and reminding them to take breaks can support both wellbeing and results.

Supporting students through GCSE revision

Mocks and GCSEs can be challenging, but with the right preparation, clear revision strategies and supportive resources, students can feel more confident and in control.

Starting early, staying organised and using practical revision techniques can help learners make the most of their revision time and approach exams with confidence.
