Coding is no longer just a skill for the future. It’s part of the lived reality of the children we teach. From creating animations to controlling smart devices, digital technologies are everywhere. Primary school is the perfect place to introduce coding in a way that is fun, engaging, and empowering, setting the foundation for critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Coding for primary children should begin with curiosity and creativity. Pupils don’t need complex theory to start; they need hands-on experiences, opportunities to experiment, and guidance to think like designers, engineers, and storytellers. With the right approach, coding learning can progress naturally from KS1 exploration to KS2 confidence.

Making coding real for young children

For younger pupils, coding should feel familiar, fun, and concrete. Block-based apps like ScratchJr allow children to create stories, games, and animations while learning computational thinking without the pressure of typing complex code.

Simple classroom activities might include:

- Creating a story where characters move, talk, and interact

- Designing a simple game where a character collects items or avoids obstacles

- Animating classroom events or familiar scenes

Core skills developed through coding activities

- Logical thinking – Understanding cause and effect in a sequence of actions

- Problem-solving – Debugging animations or games when things don’t work as expected

- Creativity and design thinking – Planning, building, and iterating on their ideas

The goal is for coding to feel like playing with a purpose. Children are storytellers, designers, and engineers all at once.

Tangible classroom sets: Bringing coding to life

One excellent resource for bringing coding concepts to life in the classroom is the Tangible Coding Half Classroom Set. This hands-on system combines physical puzzle-style tiles with a companion app, allowing pupils to arrange and test sequences of instructions in a tactile way before seeing the results on screen.

Developing problem-solving and debugging skills

By experimenting with different solutions, discovering why a sequence didn’t work, and adjusting their approach, children naturally develop problem-solving and debugging skills that are central to the primary computing curriculum.

Making abstract coding concepts concrete

Interacting with real objects and receiving immediate feedback makes abstract ideas like algorithms, logical reasoning, and correcting code feel concrete and accessible. It gives pupils the confidence to test, iterate, and learn, building resilience as they develop into young coders, designers, and storytellers.

Thinking like designers, engineers, and storytellers

Coding is more than writing instructions. It’s about thinking in steps, experimenting, and solving problems. Even in early primary school, children can begin to see themselves as creators.

Tailoring coding lessons to different learning styles

KS1: Exploring through block coding

- Use block coding to snap together simple code blocks to make characters move or speak, helping pupils understand how instructions control actions in beginner KS1 coding activities.

- Experiment with sequences and simple loops to explore how changing the order of instructions or repeating actions affects the outcome in primary coding lessons.

- Predict what will happen before running their code, encouraging logical thinking and planning during KS1 coding lessons.

- Test and improve their ideas by adjusting instructions, fixing mistakes, and building confidence in coding for primary school pupils.

Through these activities, children begin to understand foundational concepts like:

- Instructions must be clear and in the correct order for a program to work successfully.

- Mistakes help us learn, as debugging and trying again are important parts of learning to code.

- Small changes can produce different results, helping children understand cause and effect in coding programs

Programmable robots like Sphero Indi, are perfect for hands-on coding lessons in KS1.

KS2: Building Complexity

By KS2, children can take their coding further by:

- Creating interactive stories and games in Scratch or similar block-based platforms.

- Introducing variables, conditions, and loops to add logic.

- Debugging more complex projects and refining designs

- Combining coding with other subjects, such as math, science, or literacy. For cross-curricular learning.

Developing computational thinking, creativity, and resilience

This approach helps children develop computational thinking, creativity, and resilience, skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom.

Preparing pupils for a digital future

Coding kits like LEGO Education SPIKE Prime, integrate coding with robotics and hands-on learning.

Integrating coding products and resources

While apps like ScratchJr provide an entry point, schools can expand coding opportunities using a range of products and tools:

- Physical coding kits and programmable robots like the CoDrone for hands-on exploration.

- Digital storytelling platforms like Ozobot EVO to connect coding with literacy.

- Age-appropriate AI tools Like Photon AI Teaching Kit for later stages to explore data, patterns, and interactive systems.

These resources give teachers flexibility to tailor coding lessons to different learning styles while keeping children engaged and challenged.

Where coding fits in the primary curriculum

Coding already aligns closely with existing curriculum goals:

- Algorithms & sequencing – planning and following steps

- Problem-solving & debugging – developing logical thinking

- Design & creativity – storytelling, animation, and project creation

- Digital citizenship – understanding the responsible use of technology

Even without a dedicated coding curriculum, these foundations prepare pupils for a digital future, building confidence and creativity in equal measure.

The big picture: growing young coders

Coding education doesn’t need to be technical or intimidating. When introduced gradually and with purpose, it helps children:

KS1: Build curiosity, play with sequences, and develop creative confidence

KS2: Learn logical thinking, problem-solving, and design skills

Think like designers, engineers, and storytellers, applying coding to projects that matter to them

Building confident creators and critical thinkers

By building skills step by step, teachers help pupils become confident creators, critical thinkers, and responsible digital citizens. Coding becomes a tool for empowerment, not just a subject to learn.

In future posts, we’ll share practical classroom activities, project ideas, and tools like - Tangible to help children take coding even further. Connecting creativity, logic, and fun in ways that stick.
